8 Best Pain Reliever Products for Horses

Feeds are the horse’s natural source of vitamins and nutrients. It is dependent on those meals to get all the nutrients and vitamins they need. Sometimes they don’t get enough when they only eat grass or hay because horses need more than that to have a balanced diet.

The cornerstone of good nutrition is a balanced diet. This ensures all essential nutrients are available without losing or gaining weight. How to Feed Horses the Supplements

Equestrians must follow the instructions for usage, recommended feeding ratios, and end dates. Feeding supplements that are not for horses can be a waste and dangerous for your horse. Horses have limited capacity to absorb certain nutrients such as iron. Over supplementing these nutrients may result in the excess nutrients. Other nutrients like iodine have unlimited absorption. Over supplementing can be toxic to your horses. Vitamins’ effectiveness is also dependent on the end date.

Supplements are useful when your horse is in need of extra nutrients. This is also for an overall increase in the nutritional value of their diet.

What Are Vitamins & What Do They Do?

Vitamins are organic molecules required by the body in small amounts. They help maintain essential functions. Vitamins already available in the body, yet the synthesis level may not be adequate to meet the body’s needs.

There are two broad types of vitamins: water-soluble vitamins, and fat-soluble vitamins. The vitamins soluble in water are vitamins B, and vitamin C.  The vitamins which are soluble in fat are Vitamin A, D, E, and K.

Vitamins, usually water-soluble, can take up little capacity in our body.

As an organic molecule, vitamins are unstable over time. When incorporated in mixtures, they deteriorate over time. Supplements have vitamins that horses can eat, including:

Vitamin A

Vitamin A has many important functions. It is usually for the skin, eye and it’s stored in the liver.

B Vitamins

B vitamins refer to a group of vitamins with a numerical suffix. These are B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Nicotinic Acid), B6 (Pyridoxine), and B12 (Cobalamin). These are for energy release, proteins, fat breakdown, and protein synthesis.

Biotin is a B vitamin. It is important for coat and hoof strength in horses.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C functions in the immune system. It focuses on respiratory health. It scavenges free radicals to restore function to vitamin E.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption from the gut. It is of particular importance in young growing horses and broodmares. We can get some vitamin D from exposure to sunlight.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is one of the most abundant antioxidants in nature. It acts to trap and inactivate harmful free radicals. This protects against cellular injury in the body.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting and is stored in the liver.

Trace Minerals: What Do They Do?

Trace minerals or trace elements are inorganic materials. Like vitamins, they are needed by the body in small amounts to carry out essential functions. This should be part of the daily intake, as the body has no capacity to synthesize at all. As inorganic products, trace minerals from the intestine are not absorbed. By adding the mineral to a protein, these are more easily absorbed. The body has some capacity to store trace elements. As inorganic molecules, trace elements are stable over time and when used in mixtures they remain useful for a long time.

Here are some of the trace minerals:

Copper. Copper is for soft tissue growth and hair pigmentation. It has a role in red blood cells and skeletal development.

Iron. Iron is a key element in the formation of hemoglobin. It is the molecule that carries oxygen around the body.

Selenium. Selenium is an antioxidant. It works as a defense mechanism through the Glutathione Peroxides System. It acts to protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals.

Iodine. Iodine has a key role in thyroid function. The thyroid hormones regulate energy use and metabolism within the body. It is critical for fertility.

Cobalt. Cobalt is required in small amounts. The body uses it to create Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) and it is used in the release of energy from carbohydrates by cells.

Manganese. Manganese is for carbohydrate and fat metabolism. It has a role in the production of joint cartilage.

Zinc. Zinc is an important co-factor in many enzyme reactions in the body. It has a particular role in skin health and wound healing.

Which Supplements Should You Choose

1. Compare items based on quality and concentration.
2. Choose a supplement with a broad variety of vitamins and minerals.
3. Choose supplements for specific health issues if they arise.
